One-to-one support
For those who want personal support and access to experienced mentors and coaches, we offer an individual tailored service that is designed around the needs of the individual. For example, for those seeking or facing a career change, we can provide personal mentoring which is designed to assess personal strengths and preferences, explore the options available and develop and follow a personal action plan. We can help those seeking to move into or out of an academic career, those who look to change their occupation or enter education as a mature student. We give advice on self-promotion and self evaluation.

Each of our one-to-one programmes is designed around the needs of the individual participant. We welcome enquiries from both organisations on behalf of their employees and also from individuals themselves. Career Support Programme
Peter Johnstone leads this 1:1 counselling programme for those affected by redundancy, or early retirement. On these occasions individuals can feel quite emotional and isolated as they decide on their next career move. We therefore cover, in detail, all the aspects of change, including, self analysis of skills and motivation, career direction options and decisions over new job, self employment, return to education, volunteering, portfolio and contract working. Then we work closely to build appropriate CVs, and self-marketing strategies, via use of advertisements, recruitment agencies, networking, direct approaches and use of the internet. We also consider employers’ selection processes and prepare participants with interview skills and salary negotiation techniques.
At the end of the programme participants will have a thorough understanding of job search techniques and be able to build a personal and detailed campaign strategy.
Psychometric testing
Understanding ourselves, our motivations and preferences, is fundamental to our career direction and ultimate job satisfaction. As a professionally trained user of well known personality inventories as MYERSBRIGGS type indicators, PPA and Saville and Holdsworth’s Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32), Peter Johnstone can offer 1:1 analysis, individual reports & and feedback, and also group workshops considering how we relate together, also employing such additional techniques as Transactional Analysis, Belbin team role inventories and De Bono 6 hat thinking.
The outcomes for both the individual and/or the group will lead to a much greater understanding of how we ‘tick’ as individuals and appreciate the personality differences in a group or team and how best to use individual preferences to optimise group performance.
Proofreading Plus
Etain Casey has developed this service for postgraduate students who are writing their dissertations, essays, reports or theses. The work is reviewed with a view to ensuring its readability through correcting both the accuracy of structure, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary and the organisation of sentences and paragraphs. We also provide individual one-to one sessions (2 hours) to discuss selected aspects of writing.
Statistics
Many researchers benefit from personal tuition and guidance on the effective use of statistics not only in the analysis of their data, but also importantly in the design of research programmes and experiments. Derek Cooper offers one-to-one sessions to researchers, and others, who want a personal approach and have specific statistical issues to discuss.
Personal coaching for researchers
Research is a challenging and complex occupation and many people find it helpful to obtain impartial advice and coaching to help understand their career options and plan accordingly. Norman Staines offers personal coaching to research students and early career researchers.
